The mommy wars come to work

The mommy wars come to workThe mommy wars come to workAlthough choosing to have kids is a personal choice, it is one that will inevitably be judged. Whether youre a parent or not, expect to face problems in the office.A study published in the journal Sex Roles this month found that relative to targets who had chosen to have two children, voluntarily childfree women and men were penalized by perceivers in the present research. Specifically, they were perceived as leading less fulfilling lives than do people who had chosen to have children.Butthings escalated from there. Moreover, their decision to forgo parenthood, arguably individuals most personal choice, evoked moral outrage- anger, disgust, and disapproval, the study said.A caveat the study isnt a sweeping one. It featured datafrom 197 students at a large U.S. Midwestern university, and most were women. Participants were randomly assigned to evaluate a male or female married target who had chosen to have zero or two children. Parti cipants completed measures of the targets perceived psychological fulfillment and their affective reactions to the target, the study said. While the sample size was relativelysmall and participants looked down upon both women and men, this is part of an ongoing discussion about what happens if female employees have kids- but also how theyre perceived if they dont.Theres a long history of a penalty for childlessness, at least in the perception of colleagues. Parents may look down on childless coworkers as people who have fewer responsibilitiesor be wary of them as people with endless ambition. In response, at least one woman without children fought back with a very public request for me-ternity leave - which gestures at the rift, but doesnt account for the fact that actual maternity leave is designed as a medical concern, and not a social one.Childlessness shaming in politicsEven UK Prime MinisterTheresa May has been shamed for not having kids. The Times reported that during the elect ion to be prime minister, candidate Andrea Leadsom said that since she is a mother, she has a a very real stake in the future of Britain and thatMay possibly has nieces, nephews, lots of people. But I have children who are going to have children who will directly be a part of what happens next. The week beforehand, May had spoken about not being able to have kids with her husband,Philip, even though they had wanted to,according to The Guardian. But Leadsom backpedaledand apologized after being criticized for her comments. The Telegraph reported that Leadsom said,I was pressed to say how my children had formed my views. I didnt want it to be used as an issue. Having children has no bearing on the ability to be PM. I deeply regret that anyone has got the impression that I think otherwise. But she still came under fire for her comments after using Mays childlessnessas a reason for an attack.MotherhoodversusfatherhoodAlthough working women are stigmatized for being child-free, working mothe rs also deal with a variety of challenges.A report by Professor Michelle J. Budig of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst for think tank Third Waysaid thatthere is a wage penalty for motherhood of 4% per child that cannot be explained by menschenwrdig capital, family structure, family-friendly job characteristics, or differences among women that are stable over time. Second, this motherhood penalty is larger among low-wage workers while the top 10% of female workers incur no motherhood wage penalty, the report said.Even though many mothers are in the same boat, there is rivalry among those in the group.TODAYput together list of moms comments on whythe judgement is wrong. But becoming a father does not hurt all mens wallets. The report also said, all else equal, fatherhood increases mens earnings by over 6% (for fathers who live with their child). This points to a double standard.Whats the solution to all this? Maybe its this whether you have kids or not, you shouldnt be judged for y our marital or parental status at work.

Overcoming Fear at Work - The Muse

Overcoming Fear at Work - The MuseOvercoming Fear at Work Your job can sometimes feel like walking on eggshells. You dont want to do or say the wrong thing, so you hold back- and dont do or say much of anything. But succumbing to that fear can seriously impact your career success. By playing it safe, you miss out on opportunities to grow, hone your skills, and do your job more efficiently. So, its time to face your fears- starting with these five common situations that you shouldnt be afraid of at work.1. Taking the Initiative to Schedule One-on-One Meetings With Your baboMany employees assume that since the boss is in charge, its his or her job to schedule all the meetings- especially a one-on-one meeting with an employee. Managers tend to have busy schedules, and many employees dont want to risk impeding on their time, leid aya if their boss considers a meeting with them a priority. If your boss doesnt take it upon him- or herself to schedule a recurring one-on-one meeting with you, though, you should take the initiative to request one. These meetings can be incredibly helpful to your career advancement and success in your individual position within the department. An individual meeting gives you the chance to ask for advice about tricky situations or assignments, talk through challenges, request feedback about your performance, and more. (Also, most bosses will accept the meeting invite without question.)2. Making a Phone Call Instead of EmailingEmail has become the standard in most offices. From quick questions to intricate requests, almost everything is communicated electronically. Email simply seems less intrusive and gives recipients more time to really think through an answer, rather than putting them on the spot. Its the way most people communicate, and you dont want to break that mold. But relying solely on email isnt always efficient, and it certainly isnt always the right option. When you pick up the phone, you can often get the answer to a quick que stion in a fraction of the time or a better understanding of an intricate concept- one that would have been next to impossible to summarize in an email. It doesnt have to be your go-to method of communication- but you shouldnt hesitate to switch it up. 3. Turning in Something Youre Not 100% Sure AboutWhen I started in my first communications position, I was terrified to turn anything in to my boss- because I assumed that if it wasnt perfect, it would prove that I didnt deserve the role. It would take me weeks of editing and re-editing to finally turn it in, and even then, I wasnt confident about the final product. But eventually, my boss helped me learn that sometimes, its best to get something on paper, then let him take a look. Hed provide his guidance and let me know sooner rather than later if I needed to do anything differently (or, alternatively, if I was on the right track all along). Im not saying you should turn in sub-par work. But if youre feeling stuck with a certain ass ignment, dont put off showing it to your boss. He or she will usually be glad to point you in the right direction. (Just make sure to do this well before its actually due. Turning in something at the 11th hour with the side note Im really not sure if this right wont help anyone.) 4. Clarifying Assignments With Your BossNo matter what position youre in, its likely you get requests from every direction- sometimes from your boss, sometimes from your co-workers, and sometimes from other departments. Eager to please, new employees will often jump on these assignments without question. Its a fear of saying no mixed with the question of whether theyre even allowed to decline a request. Failing to evaluate these outside assignments, however, can lead to wasted time and a focus on the wrong priorities. For example, just last week, one of my co-workers jumped on an urgent assignment she received from another department and spent the entire day scrambling to finish it. When my boss found out a bout the project later that evening, he revealed that if hed known about it, he wouldnt have had her work on it at all. It simply wasnt a priority for our department. So, when you receive requests from people other than your boss- especially if they dont seem to jive with your usual work- its OK to bring it to your boss to make sure its something you should actually be working on. 5. Asking for FeedbackFeedback makes people nervous. Its the fear of the unknown- asking that open-ended question (How do you think my presentation went?), not knowing whether your boss will pat you on the back or give a disapproving shake of his or her head. You may get praise, but you also may get flat-out criticism. But keep in mind Without feedback, youre not going to get better. Without knowing how you can improve, you simply wont. Youll continue to do things the way you always have. Feedback can be uncomfortable, but its not something to be scared of. Its something to value- because its key to moving up in your career. Here are a few tips for taking it seriously, not personally. If youre not already doing these things, what are you afraid of? Incorporating these things into your career will help you do your job better- and might just be the key to your next promotion. Photo of woman at desk courtesy of Shutterstock.

4 Ways to Show HR Youre Qualified for the Job - FlexJobs

4 Ways to Show HR Youre Qualified for the Job - FlexJobs4 Ways to Show HR Youre Qualified for the Job -28How is it possible that with so many people out of work, employers still have a hard time finding people to fill their open jobs? The study offered a few possibilitiesThe economy is improving, so employers who were spoiled by the overflow of qualified workers during the recession have a hard time switching back into competition mode where they compete for the best candidates by offering perks like moving expenses and training.Or, because theyve grown used to an overflow of qualified candidates, employers have become lazy and need to look harder and up their recruiting practices to pre-recession levels. And finally, there IS a legitimate shortage of qualified professionals in highly-specialized fields like engineering, computer information technology, and manufacturing. What can job seekers do to make sure that they are noticed by employers? Here are four ways to show HR youre qual ified for the job1) Tailor every job application you submit to the specific job and company to which youre applying. Make it easy for an employer to spot your unique, well-suited job application in a pile of generic, boring, or downright mismatched applicants. For more ideas on this crucial job search stepCustomized Resumes and Cover Letters are Better for Your Job Search3 Ways to Boost Your Resume and Cover Letter with Keywords5 Changes to Make to Your Resume NOW2) Follow up on your applications. Unless an application says something like, no phone calls, its perfectly acceptable to call or e-mail the hiring manager to make sure they received your application, and let them know that youre very much interested in the job and feel you have the right qualifications. If nothing else, the hiring manager has to find your application and look at it to confirm theyve received it, and getting it in front of their eyes is a key step in the process.3) Be the first application they receive (or at least one of the first). If youre searching for jobs online, use notification tools to be instantly notified when a new job that matches your interests is posted. If youre an FJ member, check out New Jobs for You. At, we offer a New Jobs of Interest feature which lists the most recently posted jobs matching your resume profile. And we have Twitter feeds for our 50+ job categories which automatically tweet every time a new job is posted. Even if youre NOT an FJ member, you can still follow our Twitter Job Feeds. The early bird often does get the worm or at least a job interview which gets them closer to the worm.4) Dont wait for a job to be posted. Who says you need to wait for a job to be posted publicly before you try to get hired? Identify the companies you want to work for and interact with them on LinkedIn. Attend industry events where people who work for those companies are sure to be. Join local or national trade organizations and attend meetings. Volunteer in your communi ty and talk to your fellow volunteers. There are SO many ways to find a job, and online job searching is just one of them.Readers, what do you do to show HR youre qualified for the job? Share your tips

6 company-wide health challenges for 2018

6 company-wide health challenges for 20186 company-wide health challenges for 2018There are two camps you can fall in pro-New Years resolutions or *cue eye roll emoji* when a co-worker comes in on January 2, determined to drop 20 pounds. While various schools of thought recommend or dismiss the notion of new-year-new-you mentalities, improving your overall quality of life, happiness, and health is never a schwimmbad idea - regardless of what date on the calendar jumpstarts your inclination.Considering you spend far more time with your colleagues, employees, and managers than you do with your friends or family, adopting a newfound dedication to wellness might be more successful in the office environment. In addition to the obvious benefits of shedding those five extra cookies you didnt technically need at the holiday party, health and wellness coach Kevin Bailey explains the wide ripple effect of a January company program.Challenges create an office wide atmosphere of accountability and encouragement because everyone is watching each other. If the challenge has a strong reward, like money, then overall group compliance is increased. Most coworkers want to see everyone win, especially if the reward or benefit is contingent upon the success of the group or team as a whole, he says. With increased compliance, you will have more employees achieving their goal, which means they are becoming healthier The ultimate goal. This will result in increased office camaraderie, more harmony and teamwork among co-workers as a result of becoming healthier together. Here, a few ideas from health professionals on office-appropriate, company-wide challenges to propose to your team this year.Walking challengeTalented, hardworking employees come in all shapes and sizes, and any health initiative should cater to inclusivity. Not only does this reap the most participation, but it ensures no one makes a complaint to HR for an activity thats out of reach for certain staff members.Accordi ng to registered dietitian and professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Keith-Thomas Ayoob, EdD, RD, FAND, a walking competition is a pressure-free place to start. As a team, you can select any type of destination - an amusement park, a ski resort, a major city, etc. - and determine how many miles away it is. The idea is to walk those many miles over the month as a team - from commuting into work or having active meetings outside or logging miles on a treadmill.Once you reach the mile goal together, the prize is a trip to the spot you walked toward - literally.Ask your employees or coworkers what they wantThe definition of what it means to lead a healthy lifestyle will dramatically shift depending on who youre talking to. Thats why fitness coach and expert Nadia Murdock says to poll staffers on what theyd like to work on in the New Year. Perhaps its a meditation program, access to a specific boutique gym or meetings with a nutritionist.Whatever the cause, the key is ensure a prize for participation.Health challenges circled around a prize tend to do well especially when the prize is money. It creates an opportunity to get those into working out and leading a healthy lifestyle if they dont already. Chances are after the challenge is completed they will stick to their new lifestyle, she says.Individual incentivesEvery industry experiences a different busy season, and if yours happens to be at the start of the year, squeezing in time for workouts or breaks to focus on a healthy-something-or-another challenge might feel frivolous. Even so, the CEO and co-founder of Virtual Health Partners, Jillian Bridgette Cohen, says employees are inspired by individual incentives, too. This could be offering opportunities to be recognized or awarded for attending classes, walking a certain number of steps or another form of physical activity. She encourages managers to apply a 15 minute challenge, where you inspire employees to take even a short amount of time t o do something that benefits their health. It is an excuse saying you are too busy to stop. I also think offering the opportunity for employees to participate in a virtual program with nutrition, lifestyle modification and fitness is very helpful, she says.Weight loss based on percentageWhile many people are often eying the ideal number on a scale, others have further to go than their counterparts. Weight loss challenges can be difficult to implement in office settings, since everyone faces various barriers to actually shed pounds. Thats why Ayoob suggests setting aside a structured group for voluntary participation and making the incentive based on percentage lost, not actual pounds. When they lose the percentage of their body weight they set as their goal, without fad dieting, they can be rewarded with a gym membership for a month, a spa day, or whatever non food-related prize they want, he says. This takes off the pressure or any potential shaming habit they might develop because they select their own success marker.BYOL challengeEspecially if your city is covered in a sheet of sparkling, never-ending snow during the winter, takeout seems like a great idea every single day. The only issue with food thats prepared out of the home is the mystery surrounding preparation and ingredients. Understanding the true salt, sugar, and fat content is difficult, since you rarely watch it prepared before it arrives via courier. As a way to not only save money but be mindful about what youre chowing down on deskside, Ayoob suggests a bring your own lunch challenge with coworkers. The person who wins the January (and February) prize can select the one for the upcoming months, and so forth, creating friendliness and support in the office. The goal here is compliance the person or team that does this regimen the most is the winner. Without noticing, they are actually changing their lifestyles and eating habits, without focusing on losing weight, he says. Its more about eating we ll and living better.A straight-up steps challengeA step - no pun intended - from the miles contest is a step challenge. With a plentiful budget, you can purchase pedometers or even FitBits for the whole office, inspiring employees to battle kindly against one another. Because everyone can track their steps, Bailey recommends rewarding every employee, with various levels of achievement, from 10,000 to one million steps.

Workplace Toxin Office Politics - Spark Hire

Workplace Toxin Office Politics - Spark HireAny workplace is much mora complex than it seems at first, and part of being a member of the workforce, especially in a managerial position, is deciphering what is really going on in a work environment and effectively dealing with any issues that arise before they become bigger problems. One unfortunately common issue that adversely affects many places of work is schreibstube politics.Defining Office PoliticsOffice politics is a catch-all term that describes something that is always political, but can apply to any workplace, not just an office environment. Although politics are often part of the workings of an organization, and not necessarily a bad thing, office politics refers to a particularly destructive type of political maneuvering. When a person works to pursue only their own agenda and only their own best interests, without any consideration of the consequences for their coworkers or their company in general, that is the essence of office politics.Common tactics of office politicians include gossip, brazen toadying (to superiors and/or colleagues), stealing credit while deflecting blame, and intricate combinations of all of the above and other forms of subtle and not so subtle manipulation.Whats wrong with Office Politics?Just about any workplace will have some degree of politicking and machinations among its employees. This becomes a problem when somebody is only looking out for themselves, at the expense of anything and everything else. The consequences of this mentality can range from basically nonexistent to downright destructive for both the organization and its employees.Identifying Office PoliticsGenerally, people who play a self-serving game in the workplace want to be subtle about it enough not to be identified. Depending on circumstances, and what purpose they are trying to serve, there might not be much of an attempt to hide political scheming. However, usually you have to read between the lines of what is going on to get the feel for the political landscape of a workplace. The tactics mentioned above are often a good sign of at least some degree of toxic politics, but not always. All it takes is some knowledge of the common tactics, a bit of common sense, and experience. The more experience you have in working environments, the easier it is to spot office politics.Dealing with Office PoliticsDealing with office politics is a complex skill set. A good education in human resources management will help equip you with the skills you need to both read the dynamics of a workplace, and deal with problems as they come. One very effective way to deal with common types of workplace manipulation is to not fall prey to the usual tactics. For instance, gossip is often used as a way to manipulate opinions, damage reputations, and put others at a disadvantage whether gossip is part of a larger manipulation or not, it is always sensible to avoid and discourage gossip in the workplace, espec ially in a managerial role.As a manager, you may also run into obvious sycophancy. While it is advisable to thank and give credit to somebody making an effort, it is important not to let yourself be manipulated by what is, unfortunately, often a self-serving strategy.More than anything, dealing with office politics means spotting these tendencies as they come, and not getting drawn into the fray. 3 reasons you need a vacation (and the example it sets for employees)

3 reasons you need a vacation (and the example it sets for employees)3 reasons you need a vacation (and the example it sets for employees)Many leaders love the work they do and dont feel a need to take a vacation or time off in order to get away. Theres nothing for them to get away from In fact, a new Harvard study shows that CEOs worked 70 percent of vacation days with an average of 2.4 hours on those days. While its wonderful to be passionate about your work, its also important to fully take a break in order to recharge.Additionally, vacation is not just about you taking time off will help your employees step up as well as create a culture of wohlbefinden in your organization. Read on for three reasons to start planning your summer vacation right now.You will gain clarityIf you are always working with your nose to the grindstone, you never have the option to look up and gain perspective. This leads to a narrow view and could cause you to miss out on big opportunities because your b rain is on a single track. I believe you need to create space in order to have space to create, meaning you arent able to give your best, creative input until your mind can relax from the constant busyness of your business. Tony Gauda, CEO of threat security firm ThinAir, adds, When I come back from vacation, Im fresher, productive and more efficient.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreGauda also acknowledges that it can be difficult for leaders to step away. The way I convince myself to take a break, and how Id advise others to do the same, is reminding yourself that rest is a performance enhancement, not an inhibitor, Gauda shares. Taking vacations prevents burnout, physically, mentally and emotionally. Being away from your business will give you time to miss it and rekindle the passion that caused you to start the business in the first place. When you return home, youll be full of excitement and new ideas.Your team will step upTheres nothing like being away to show all the gaps you were filling. When you are no longer there to save the day (or anticipate and fix things before the day needs saving) there will inevitably be balls that drop. This is actually a good thing. Seeing the gaps in roles and coverage will make the company stronger and create better coverage for the future. Once you return, take a look at the tasks you effectively delegated before your departure. Can any of them be permanently delegated? Often they can, and it takes us being away to fully trust this. Delegate as much as you can and use the extra time for strategic thinking and partnerships.Taking time away also allows your team to step up. Experience is the best teacher, so when team members face a perplexing, anxiety-inducing dilemma, they are going to think, work, strategize, and solve that problem. Theyre going to learn how to function without the constant presence of their leader. Thats good for them and you, says Neil Patel, cofounder of Crazy Egg, Hello Bar, and KISSmetrics. Seeing who takes initiative and rises while you are away is also useful come promotion time. Make sure to check in with a manager, or another leadership team member, upon your return to learn who performed well (and didnt). You will emphasize a culture of wellnessTime away from the office can benefit all employees, and that example starts at the top. If employees see their leadership never taking a day off and working nights and weekends, they will assume they need to as well. It starts with you and leading by example will help confirm to your employees that vacations are encouraged. In the constant talent war, benefits like time off (and a culture that encourages that) go a long way in recruiting and retaining employees.Aron Ain, CEO of workforce software Kronos, went so far as to implement an unlimited vacation policy in his company. The results were astounding. In the first year of t he policy, employees took 2.6 more days off on average than the prior year. From a financial standpoint, it was our best year ever. I dont think thats a coincidence, Ain shares. Employee engagement scores improved as well. Showing that your company values time off will also make employees more motivated and productive knowing they have the ability to take a vacation will encourage them to get their work done. Giving and encouraging vacation time helps retain employees as well as create a culture that values wellness, happiness, and productivity. In a world where we are online 24/7 and constantly accessible to work, the need for time off cannot be over-estimated. As the head of your company, its your responsibility to be the best leader you can be. This includes taking a vacation. Not only will you gain mental clarity and come home with new ideas, but you will also highlight the gaps you are filling that need to be accounted for. Additionally, you might even find that things you deleg ated for your time away can be permanently delegated freeing you up to lead. Most importantly, taking time away from work shows all other employees its okay to do so and that the company values it. A culture of wellness leads to increased engagement and less turnover. This summer, do yourself and your company a favor by taking some well-deserved time off.More than just a bestselling author, Sue Hawkes is a keynote speaker, Certified EOS Implementer, Certified Business Coach, WPO Chapter Chair, award-winning and globally recognized seminar leader, and an entrepreneur. Why the theory behind SoulCycles newest workout should be applied to your career

Why the theory behind SoulCycles newest workout should be applied to your careerWhy the theory behind SoulCycles newest workout should be applied to your careerFor most of us, the speed of go-go-go is pretty much the status quo. It is true at work and often the minute we leave the office. And usually, it is true of our workouts. After all, the rise of boutique fitness was built on the concept that they get you in and out within an hour and sweat and burn as many calories as possible so you can get back to the next part of your day. That is why it is so interesting that the uber-popular spin workout SoulCycle just launched a class that is all about letting your heart rate completely drop so you can recover before you move on to the next challenge (which in this case is pushing against a lot of resistance at a high speed). It is called SoulActivateand though you are still on the bike and listening to awesome music, this is actually very different from a typical 45-minute classic SoulCycl e class.Pushing yourself to recoveryIn the standard SoulCycle class, the goal is to keep your heart rate up the entire time. In Activate, which is a full hour, it combines the intense cycling with strength training utilizing both light and heavy weights during multiple arm series, timed heart rate variation and then something different Intentional recovery. This portion is designed to work the bodys various energy systems and ultimately burn fat and build endurance. You are pushing extremely hard but then allowing yourself to recover. You take a break. As someone who tried the class and is a regular SoulCycler (the word addict has maybe been used a few times), I can say that this felt significantly different from a regular class and it also felt awesome. But it did take some getting used to as running at top speed with no breaks is what I am used to.Christina Phillips, a Senior SoulCycle instructor and one of the instructors for SoulActivate, said the new elements that have been incor porated including high-intensity timed intervals, heavier weight training and less focus on the rhythm with more focus on resistance forces riders to dig deeper, mentally and physically, and push even harder, but also intentionally recover and find strength in the calm moments. These recovery moments almost become meditative amongst such demanding elements of the class,Phillips added. This is also great practice for outside the senderaum walls, finding strength in your calm and power when you need it the most.Taking breaks is beneficialIn a society wheremore than half (54%) of Americans didnt take all their vacation days last year, the idea of taking a moment whether it is a walk outside or not eating lunch at your desk is foreign to some but it can have real benefits. A study found that watching an entertaining video or even looking at nature for one minute can improve employee performance.Stephen Covey writes in the7 Habits of Highly Effective Peopleabout the sharpening the saw the ory in which if the woodcutter never takes a break and just keeps cutting wood his saw will only get duller. He needs to pause and sharpen the saw so he can get more done.Phillips said, My hope is that riders leave feeling grounded, stronger and connected to their inner athlete, empowered by their efforts and ready to take on any challenge that comes their way.Sounds like a good way to approach your work as well (just leave the spandex at home.)

7 tactics to help you keep engaged at work in the heat

7 tactics to help you keep engaged at work in the heat7 tactics to help you keep engaged at work in the heatSummer the nights are longer the weathers warmer and the mood is brighter. But if, like the majority of the population, you are stuck in yur office during this wonderful time you may find yourself a little more hot and bothered and a lot less focused than normal. It can be really difficult to motivate yourself to tackle a mountain of emails when your get up and go, has got up and gone to a beach, with a sangria in one hand and an ice-lolly in the other. So, we have put together our top tips to help you stay cool and collected in an office-based heatwave.1. Keep hydratedUp your H20 to ensure you are staying hydrated, alert and focused. Drinking more as the weather heats up is notlage only essential for stopping dehydration and sun (or Aperol Spritz)-induced headaches but is also imperative in helping decrease fatigue, brain fog, and irritability. Not a fan of water? Add fruit fo r an added flavour-boost of vitamins and minerals or a spoonful of chia seeds to help retain water and keep you hydrated for longer.2. Treat yo selfIts hard enough dealing with Donna from HR, your anfhrer breathing down your neck and the long commute on a good day but when the temperature doubles, sodoesthe stress, strains and pit-stains. So, make sure that you are treating yourself for accomplishing your workload. Whether that is with a glass of Pimms after work, a new breezy summer outfit or a snazzy new pedicure set goals, smash them and reap the rewards.3. Cool chicIf the phrase goes, dress for the body you wantand the body you want is cool, breezy and moist-free then we have just the tip for you. Swap fitted heavy suits for skirts and dresses and incorporate lighter materials where feasible. Speak to your boss if you are unsure where your limitations lie when it comes to your works dress code. Just remember you need to be comfortable but not too casual it will be even harder to concentrate when your outfit screams beach-ready but your boss screams 9 am board-room.4. Plan aheadHaving a routine planned out and on paper (or app) is the easiest way to make sure you are hitting your goals throughout the day and stopping your mind from wandering to an Out of Office mindset. Make sure to include both professional, personal and social tasks to help you prioritise and keep on track.5. Switch it upAs important as it is to make sure you are sticking to your planned routines and goals its also very important to keep things interesting and exciting to keep yourself motivated and to avoid falling into a rut. Where possible try and work outside, say yes to more opportunities, meet friends for coffee or drinks after work rather than heading straight home or ask to work a different shift.6. Keep your coolWhen temperatures are rising its very easy for stress levels and anxiety to follow suit but make sure to keep your cool. Getting angry can not only ruin your mood but also your entire offices, as well as literally making you all hot and flustered under the collar. Work and manners dont just stop because its summer so make sure to remove yourself from any situation if it starts to heat up and allow yourself the ability to calm down before returning cool and level-headed.7. Just get outAs much as we want it too, summer doesnt stay around for long so make sure to make the most of it. Allowing yourself the ability to spend as much time outside basking in the wonderful sunshine can help you to stay more motivated in more ways than one. Having plans that you can look forward too can help you work harder to finish on time, as well as helping you to work even better the next day after having a carefree and sunny evening. The boost of Vitamin D can help elevate your endorphins and unlock your creativity. Try walking to the office instead of jumping on the tube, ask to meet clients or colleagues outside for coffee and give yourself sunshine breaks to har vest the rays benefits. This article was originally published on YourCoffeeBreak.co.uk.

yes, you can use Times New Roman on your resume

yes, you can use Times New Roman on your resume yes, you can use Times New Roman on your resume A bunch of people have sent me this article making its way around the internet that claims that you shouldnt use Times New Roman on your resume. Like so much resume advice that focuses on the look of your resume rather than its substance, its wrong and you can ignore it. If you read the article closely, youll notice that this wasnt an actual study of how hiring managers perceive different fonts. They asked three typography specialists which typefaces people should use. Typography specialists people who care passionately about fonts. Not hiring managers. When are people going to stop taking hiring advice from people who  arent in charge of hiring? (Answer: Never, because this approach offers endless possibilities for click-bait.) As long as you pick a professional and reasonably conservative font, your resume font doesnt matter. At least outside of the design field, no one is being particularly influenced by whether your you use Times New Roman over Helvetica. Theyre just not. Its true that there are some fonts that arent professional enough for a resume (hopefully at this point we dont even need to name Comic Sans), but when you hear people telling you that your resume font needs to be exciting or attention-grabbing, mark that person down as someone who doesnt understand what matters in a resume and  continue happily on your way. And be highly, highly skeptical of  people telling you that hiring managers care deeply about things that  no sane hiring manager you know has ever cared about.

What Digital Customer Experience Is Why Its the Job of the Future

What Digital Customer Experience Is Why It’s the Job of the Future What Digital Customer Experience Is Why It’s the Job of the Future Customer experience is no longer limited to inside the four walls of any company, or even a phone. It stretches online through anything with a digital interface, from a computer to a tablet or a smartphone  - all of which encompasses what is called digital customer experience. And it is, as you may expect from your own dependence on such devices, the service of the future. Many companies now have customer service divisions dedicated solely to the digital space, and that includes Blue Shield of California . In fact, digital customer experience is so important today and for the future that Blue Shield is ramping up its hiring in this division, the company says. It might seem odd that a healthcare company would invest in creating a robust, even warm, digital customer experience. But not to Blue Shield, says Pooja Jmath, the senior director of digital customer experience at Blue Shield of California. “ Health care is emotional and very personal,” Jmath says. “Every single user interaction carries powerful emotions because our members don’t just check the Blue Shield of California app or member website for fun - they’re interacting with us because they need help. They engage with our digital products when they need services, care or information that will help them live a healthier life. Understanding this, our digital customer experience team designs experiences that acknowledge the needs of our members as both users of our products and human beings.” How do they do it? Blue Shield uses empathy and personalization, even in the digital space. As Cecilia Sun, the vice president of digital customer experience at Blue Shield of California, explains, “We combine insights with data insights to deliver data-driven, personalized digital interactions at scale. Everyone in DCE wants to do work that is impactful and makes a difference in people’s lives. Each of us has a personal story that connects us to the company’s mission … to ensure all Californians have access to quality care at an affordable price. Our members are all individuals with unique needs, and to build trust we have to deliver experiences that are relevant, timely and reflect the individual user’s needs.” When Blue Shield hires employees for its digital customer experience team, it searches for people who can easily show compassion and empathy to its members, says Sun. “The term ‘digital customer experience’ takes on new meaning when it translates, in real-life, into the ‘new mom experience,’ ‘cancer patient experience,’ ‘wellness experience’ or ‘mental health experience,’” she says. Blue Shield wants digital customer experience employees who can put themselves in their customers’ shoes, anticipating their needs and meeting them. For example, Sun recalls customer feedback in which a patient expressed frustration when her health plan wasn’t more proactive with providing information about a new diagnosis. “We’re working to anticipate these needs as we design digital experiences,” Sun explains. What’s more, adds Jmath, Blue Shield wants digital customer experience employees who are willing to push the envelope - or the webpage, so to speak. “In DCE at Blue Shield of California, it’s like we’re a little startup operating inside a big company,” she says. “When we bring somebody on, we want someone who’s not afraid to challenge the status quo and drive change in a meaningful and collaborative way. Our team shares a passion for making an impact on people’s lives, and we look for people who understand the gravity of the work we do.” Digital customer experience employees at Blue Shield are also diverse, explains Jmath. “Our organization understands the value of diversity within a high-performing team,” she says, and “that includes diversity of experience, opinion, gender, race and ethnicity, as well as other personal characteristics that make us who we are as individuals.” Part of that means welcoming team members with experience in other industries beyond health care. “We have team members with a wide variety of backgrounds, in industries such as financial services, entertainment, retail, technology , consumer electronics, professional sports, food and beverage, energy and of course health care,” describes Jmath. “We’ve deliberately built in this diversity of experience because in order to bring health care into the digital age, we need expertise from industries that are further along on this journey.” With a great team behind it, Blue Shield can work on creating the best digital customer experience possible - starting with understanding its users. “We know that one size does not fit all when it comes to health care,” Jmath says. “Each segment has unique needs and challenges, so we’re taking the time to understand who our users are and drill down into what they need and expect from these digital experiences. By really listening to our user feedback and directly asking for their input before launching something, we demonstrate that our focus in on our members, and becoming their trusted advisor.” For example, the team is even trying to make the digital customer experience - as it applies to billing - better. “In recent digital surveys, a top issue for many of our users was the lack of mobile payments through the Blue Shield of California app,” Jmath explains. “As a direct response to our user feedback, we delivered mobile billing this year through the app, and also went a step further; we sent communications back to the members who had brought this issue to our attention, letting them know we’re listening and that we’re responsive to their needs. This kind of member-centered work builds trust and creates a positive experience both for the users and the DCE team.” Interested in working for a team that embraces the future,  pushes the envelope and welcomes diversity? How to discard the notion of impossible and be successful

How to discard the notion of impossible and be successful How to discard the notion of impossible and be successful If I believed anyone who told me it was impossible to go from being a single mother of four children under seven-years-old on welfare to getting hired as a CEO it might have dragged me down. So, I didn’t ask anybody if they thought I’d succeed. I just went about my work and goals as if I could not fail.Over the last 20 years I have led organization with up to $26 million in assets. I increased trade show attendance 150% my first year as executive director of a trade association. I led a campaign to add a patient pavilion and healing garden when people said, “That will never happen.” And I led a $10.4 million capital campaign for a first ever Heart Center, new ER and Women’s and Infants’ Center on the heels of the largest hospital bankruptcy in U.S. history.“Impossible” is just a lofty word thrown around by people who play it safe. It is a notion to believe that just because something isn’t mainstream or the norm it cannot be done. More significantly â€" it is a trig ger message laid down from previous experience by well-meaning people who wanted to protect you from disappointment. “Don’t take risk because you will fail and be hurt.” Impossible is not a fact. It is an opinion. It’s nothing. All the leaders I coach want the same thing â€" to engage their teams, clients and customers to take action. They want to advance in their career, get the promotion and be paid more. They don’t want to do that at the expense of their well-being and rightfully so. An engaging presence happens when you align your intention with your attention and emotions. This results in the balance of fear and hope. But how do you take yourself to the edge of where your comfort zone meets revolution to have that balanced presence. Everybody likes to feel comfortable. You want to grow, innovate and soar with eagles but sometimes when you do your comfort zone clips your wings right at takeoff. You know the feeling of imminent success â€" it’s when you sense that adren aline thrill and a twinge of fear at exactly the same moment. You are excited to see what happens next. You have the confidence to jump off the cliff of security and know that you will fly not descend to the ground like Wylie Kayote. You have a clear line of sight to the horizon even though you are not sure what is there. The destination need not be in vivid view. You just know you will get there.I never saw being successful as impossible. I didn’t even see it as a dare. I saw it as inevitable. I was mindful of my goal which was to be successful in the shortest time possible. I had four children who were hungry and needed an education. Failure was not an option. The path to centered leadership is not linear. Leaders zig-zag every day. Lean in to the questions that arise along the way. Squeeze into that space between “I’m not sure” and “I am really excited” to uncover opportunity. Allow your questions to lead you down the path. Don’t seek perfect answers. Just listen. So lutions will come into view when you are completely open and vulnerable enough to accept that DONE is better than PERFECT. You need not have it all figured out. Self-awareness is your guide not anxiety. Allow discomfort to be part of the process. Don’t run from it or it will run your life.Pause and be curious to the journey. Who is there? What is important? Meaning is right in front of you. When you play it safe meaning has no one to soar with.Disappointment is the result of unmet expectations. I focus on goals and outcomes in my work because that is how we measure and retool. I do not expect to control the process of how I get there. I do plan â€" then allow innovation to unfold and trust that modifying the process is as essential as innovation. I need not control everything. Just observe itI got over the fear of rejection early as I processed the realities of divorce. I learned to lean in to vulnerability when I was afraid because leaning out left me detached from even the good feelings such as joy, love and fulfillment. And I realized the value of living in the moment as I became an observer of life as opposed to being the conductor of it. There is magic in silence. So, when anyone tells you your goals are impossible, I suggest that you ask them what they would do if they knew they could not fail. If they can’t answer, you’ll know where they’ll be in a year. The bigger question is where do you want to be in a year?

Training and Development Options for Small Businesses

Training and Development Options for Small Businesses Training and Development Options for Small Businesses Profitable small businesses recognize that it's not so much what employees currently know that shapes a company's future - it's what they must eventually know that's most important. In addition, the degree to which your company is genuinely committed to the training and development of your employees is a critical factor in attracting and keeping high-performing employees. Small business training options: pros and cons Here are some small business training options, along with their advantages and drawbacks: In-house training and development In the traditional and most familiar form of training and development, in-house classrooms, a group of employees gathers in a room and is led through the program by an instructor. These sessions occur on- or off-site and can be facilitated by trainers who are either employees themselves or outside specialists. Pros - The main advantage to classroom training and development (apart from its familiarity) is that it provides ample opportunities for group interaction and gives instructors a chance to motivate the group and address the individual needs of students. Cons - In-house classroom training requires considerable administrative support, such as coordinating schedules, reserving training space and other logistical steps. Public seminars You can encourage employees to attend topic-specific workshops that are organized and run by training and development companies. These seminars are usually held at a public site, such as a hotel or conference center. Pros - Public seminars require little or no administrative support. The per-person cost is usually reasonable. Cons - Most public seminar offerings are, by necessity, generic. Topics covered don't necessarily have direct relevance to your particular company. Another problem: inconsistent quality from one seminar to the next. Executive education seminars Seminars and workshops offered by universities and business schools are targeted, in most cases, to middle and upper-level managers. They typically cover a wide range of theoretical concepts and practical pointers for putting these principles into practice. Pros - Instructors are usually faculty members with a high level of expertise. These kinds of seminars are good opportunities for attendees to network and share ideas. Cons - Courses at the more prestigious schools can take the executive away from the office for more days than desired. They're also often an expensive form of small business training. Choose these courses wisely - make sure that events cover management concepts and techniques that are relevant or applicable to your firm's business focus and culture. E-learning The great payoff of e-learning is its flexibility and speed, delivering the real-time immediacy of classroom instruction without the need to actually be present in a classroom. Pros - E-learning has a number of important benefits: Vastly increases the scope and reach of a corporate training and development effort Eliminates - or greatly reduces - ancillary, non-learning expenses of small business training, such as travel and lodging costs for participants Enables students to work at their own pace and convenience so they avoid downtime Enables participants to not only experience training and development in real time but also store and subsequently retrieve information transmitted through the course Enables students to set up individualized objectives and establish milestones to mark different levels of achievement Liberates you or your staff from classroom presentations, enabling more one-on-one consultations Cons - The downside of e-learning is that lack of human interaction and direct instructor involvement can hamper the learning process among people who are not self-motivated. Then again, if an employee is not driven to succeed, he or she may not be right for your company.

Arizona adventures Caves, canyons and behind

Arizona adventures Caves, canyons and behind Arizona adventures Caves, canyons and behind I’d seen the Grand Canyon once, and in fairly grand style. I was in Vegas with a friend and booked a helicopter flight that landed inside it with a sunset flyover of the Vegas strip on the return. It was a fabulous, unforgettable experience but I still had a hunger to see more of it.Five years later, I would return for a caves and canyons tour of Arizona that would provide more than mind-boggling views.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Goldfield Ghost TownIt’s lunchtime when I arrive at Goldfield Ghost Town, a 45-minute drive from the Phoenix Airport. It feels desolate with occasional stragglers toddling in and out of shops and galleries filling the formerly abandoned post office, jail, saloons, and an out of place Victorian bordello. It’s jarring against the otherwise brown wooden structures sitting in front of the mountains. There’s an underground mine offering tour s of the site where upwards of $4 million in gold would be unearthed, bringing about 1,500 hopefuls to the tiny, makeshift town for 5 years until the gold ran out. This too seems empty at the moment. That’s because everyone’s inside Mammoth Saloon. Here, Cowboy Dan, who’s lived in more countries that I can count, hosts the hungry for hearty meals at wooden tables under stag heads and a massive collection of signed cowboy boots. It’s a hodgepodge of curated local history represented in the curios of a century of visitors to this preserved town. Cowboy Dan insists on shots of ouzo before lunch is over. I better understand the bordello now.Next up, The Apache TrailFollowing the Apache Trail afterward toward Tortilla Flat is a more challenging drive than the first one. A winding road without guardrails hugs the Superstition Mountains and the drop-offs are tremendous. So are the views. Suddenly, Tortilla Flat emerges, a small strip of storefronts surrounded by absolutely nothing. It’s all that’s left of an old Western town, and it’s exactly as you’d imagine, at least on the outside. Facing a dramatic cliff and separated by a steep canyon, a handful of wooden buildings have little to distinguish them from a Western film set but inside is another story. Some come for the prickly pear ice cream in the general store or for a drink at the bar where real saddles top the barstools, but everyone stays for the dollars. Papering every surface are donated bills, totaling more than 400,000, for what may be the most expensive wallpaper in the world, and certainly in Arizona. Many are signed with notes of where the traveler came from, but donations come so fast and furious that some walls are papered four deep. I notice the cameras and the warning signs.Saguaro Lake Guest RanchChecking in to Saguaro Lake Guest Ranch, my first day touring the Mesa, Arizona area begins to wind down, but not before a quick hike up a trail behind the cabins to check out the petroglyph s. The receptionist shows me a map on her computer, then warns me to be quick because the sun will set soon. It only takes about fifteen minutes to reach the glyphs, and I’m back in time to watch the vibrant pink and orange sunset behind the imposing cliffs. It’s a magical moment that couldn’t feel any more ranch-like than if I scripted it.   A bell rings for dinner which is served community-style next-door to reception. Sitting outside by a fire afterward, I sip a Kilt Lifter beer from local Four Peaks Brewing and gaze at more stars than I’m used to seeing. The fire’s contained in a metal barrel, far from any vegetation because we’re in the Sonoran Desert. They call them “burn barrels” here.Hiking the Wind Cave TrailIn the morning I head to Usery Mountain Regional Park to hike the Wind Cave Trail, one of 21 trails in the 3,400+ acre park, the largest in the US. It’s a moderate, 2.6-mile trail of switchbacks that’s heavily trafficked, but the reward at the end is the wind cave, a hollowed alcove formed by thousands of years of wind with sweeping views of the valley below. I’m a little disappointed that it’s not quite at the top of Pass Mountain, so after a rest and some photos it’s time to descend. Until my friend Suzanne notices a “travel at your own risk” sign pointing further upward. We decide to chance it.Reaching the summit isn’t strenuous - there’s some careful foot placement required- but the lack of maintenance here presents a mental challenge as it’s unclear if there  is  a way to continue upward. We stop two or three times and encounter a smattering of others who’ve given up, unable to find the route. Ultimately, we too decide there’s no way to the top until we spot one last possible scramble that might get us further along. And it does! When Suzanne and I reach the summit, she gives a holler of triumph and we start our descent. It proves much harder on the way down, and soon we realize we’re not on the same path and have no idea where we are.   Suzanne reminds me that you’re not lost until you give up, so we push onward keeping a distant landmark in sight until we rediscover the wind cave. From there, it’s an easy jaunt back down the beautifully maintained trail.   Later, I read a description of the mountain that includes the phrase, “few see the summit of Pass Mountain,” and smile.Time for a paddle on Saguaro LakeAfter lunch I decide to kayak on awesomely scenic Saguaro Lake, exploring the corridors of towering cliffs by slowly navigating around vegetation and low hanging rock. Eventually, I reach a dead end (it is a lake, after all) flanked by cliffs more than 20 feet apart and marvel at the crystalline reflection of sunbathed water on rock everywhere. Despite the serenity of this remote spot I feel a rush of energy and am moved by the staggering beauty. Returning to shore against the wind proves a bit harder and in the end, I’m out on the lake for more than two hours. Itâ €™s a very long but rewarding day of physical activity.Starting the day with a morning horseback rideIn the morning, I take a guided horseback ride through the property. The horses follow each other, climbing steep hills and crossing water, and we begin to see inspiring views of saguaro cactus fields. This is the most familiar cactus and it exists only in this desert, stretching from northern Mexico into Arizona. The cacti’s whimsical arms personify them to locals, who claim to know each one by name. More than once I heard, “If you stare at them long enough, you’ll get to know them.” I admit they have a certain aura about them and am not surprised by the mystical trance they hold over those who live among them. And on to the Grand CanyonFrom here It’s a 3-hour drive to Flagstaff and the south rim of the Grand Canyon for sunset. The light is fading when I arrive, with much of the rock tucked into a blanket of deep purples and pinks as night approaches. It’s bigger than I r emember, and as it’s November, much colder with temperatures fluctuating dramatically. I stay only an hour and head right back to my hotel for warmth and sleep. I want to return for sunrise. At dawn, it’s just 16 degrees when I arrive at another vantage point along the South Rim, and it doesn’t warm up much. The moment the sun rises and I watch the peaks turn from gray to fiery orange, I’m convinced that it was worth enduring the frigid winds. I realize this morning that I’m appreciating the Grand Canyon’s splendor by experiencing new viewing points along its monumental expanse.Except at Horseshoe Bend. Here, in Page, Arizona, at a picturesque point where the Colorado River makes a dramatic turn, the rockscapes are nearly as photogenic and captivating as the river. Wildly textured and tinted a Martian red, these rock walls of Horseshoe Bend bring out the child in me and I can’t resist climbing every one of them. It’s slippery in places so I stay alert and I love how n atural it feels dangling over the edge. Invigorated, I finally feel satisfied that I’ve really experienced the Grand Canyon because of the quality of the many special moments I’ve had.Goulding’s Lodge in Monument ValleyTwo hours east, just across the Utah border, I arrive at Goulding’s Lodge in Monument Valley. There’s a safari-style truck waiting to take us to a desert dinner among the epic sandstone formations. There, I feast on flame-cooked steak, beans, and Navajo frybread while a trio called Dark Sky perform intertribal entertainment. The evening ends with dancing around a fire under the stars, sheltered by imposing rock formations, the drums echoing in the darkness.I brave the cold one last time to watch the sunrise in Monument Valley.  This collection of monumental buttes surrounded by nothingness is otherworldly and especially when the sun ignites the ancient sandstone turning it to fiery red. I’m stunned by the beauty and silence of this place and pause to refl ect, then head to the warm vehicle for the 2-hour drive to Chinle, Arizona for one last jaw-dropper.Finally, Canyon de ChellyArizona is steeped in Native American heritage, and nowhere is this more visceral than in Canyon de Chelly (pronounced “shay”), where the past is devastating. Here our Navajo guide shares the brutal story of Native American removal, highlighting the violence that once filled the caves of this peaceful place. Today, it’s owned by the Navajo Nation and is a national monument, co-managed by the National Park Service. It’s absolutely breathtaking, with steeply sloped trails and tantalizing caves, but the ruins of centuries-old structures, abandoned by force, cast a somber glow over it. Like all the caves and canyons along my trek from Mesa to Monument Valley and back, it’s a place to applaud the impossible splendor of nature, and to contemplate the past and my place in the future.Where to stay:Saguaro Lake Guest Ranch - Live the dude ranch life at this rustic 20-cabin ranch along the Salt River, just below the Bulldog Cliffs.13020 Bush Highway, Mesa, AZ; (480) 984-2194;  www.saguarolakeranch.comGoulding’s Monument Valley - Monument Valley’s premier lodge, Goulding’s started as a simple trading post in the 1920s before the filming of Stagecoach put it on the map, starting a long history of Hollywood stays here.1000 Goulding’s Trading Post Road, Monument Valley, UT;  (435) 727-3231;  www.gouldings.comWhere to eat:  Mammoth Saloon - The centerpiece of the Goldfield Ghost Town, this steakhouse and burger joint is famous for its quirky décor and exuberant proprietor.4650 N. Be sure to include only relevant skills; being an excellent banjo player is probably not a qualification for a job as a registered nurse.A few top skills in your industry may include Maintaining accurate electronic and written records Wound care Cardiac acute care Physical and emotional staminaPolish Your Work History SectionShowing a recruiter that you have the necessary experience for the job is done in the work history section. Include between five and eight bullet points for each position history that shows a wide variety of the responsibilities you had. Showing a range helps potential employers see that you are capable of many different tasks.Begin the sentences with strong action verbs, and include metrics whenever possible. Take a look at the registered nurse resume template for Word for additional examples.Registered Nurse â€" St. Matthews Hospital, Chattanooga, Tennessee â€" June 2008 to present Train and mentor 12 student nurses every year Maintain detailed, accurate, and organized records of 100-120 patients each month Cultivate rapport with patients daily; listen to needs and make sure treatment plans are carried out efficiently and effectively Communicate with physicians and other hospital staff to ensure continuity of care Oversee the work of six volunteers. Organize donations and ensure delivery to patientsRegistered Nurse â€" Premier Medical, Tallahassee, Florida â€" May 2011 to August 2015 Performed assessments on 15-20 patients daily, including taking vitals, getting medical history, and doing general medical examinations Edu cated patients about treatment plans and other orders from the physicians to ensure compliance and fast recovery Evaluated efficiency of the clinic by conducting surveys, monitoring patient wait time, and looking for ways to improve Implemented new protocol that reduced patient waiting time by 20 percent and improved satisfaction ratings by 15 percent Supervised the work of medical assistants and office staff to ensure compliance with best practice standards and patient confidentiality measuresRefine Your Education SectionThe education section is an important part of the resume, but it should also be easy for a hiring manager to read through quickly. Include any professional affiliations, trainings, certifications, and other applicable educations, but be sure to keep your highest level of education at the top of the resume. As the registered nurse resume template for Word demonstrates, you should not include your GPA unless you have recently graduated, but you should include any hon ors, such as summa cum laude or magna cum laude.Registered Nurse Education Section SampleBachelor of Science in Nursing, 2012University of California at Los AngelesCertifications RN â€" BC, American Nurses Credentialing Center Certified Pediatric Nurse

How Knowing Your Personality Type Can Help You in an Interview

How Knowing Your Personality Type Can Help You in an Interview How Knowing Your Personality Type Can Help You in an Interview 4As a job seeker, no matter your industry, you’re up against a lot of competition. Even the best and the brightest have to find new ways to stand out and make an impression with recruiters and hiring managers. One way to get an edge is to leverage the insights that you can gain about your personality type and working style using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator  (MBTI) and other personality testing instruments. What does taking a personality test have to do with acing an interview? The answer is that self-knowledge can be the key to a top interview performance. Myers-Briggs provides you with critical details about your personal and professional preferences, and how you’re likely to respond in certain situations, both on the job and off. By taking the time to determine your personality type and then understand it, you can in effect give yourself a secret weapon to outshine the competition when trying to land a position. Here are steps that you can use as a job seeker to get to the bottom of your personality type. Armed with this information, you can use the tips below to then leverage that information to improve your performance in job interviews. Taking the Test Myers-Briggs is among the most popular (if not the  most popular) personality testing tools available. The assessment helps identify how you prefer to do things in four key areas: directing and receiving energy, taking in information, making decisions, and approaching the outside world. Having this information about your personality and preferences can help guide both your career path and your approach to interviews, since by knowing yourself well, you’ll be better positioned to answer questions from the hiring team about how you might approach specific workplace situations. If you’re ready to find out what your personality type is, there are several ways to take the MBTI. You can take it online through the official MBTI Online  site for $49.95 (plus tax where applicable). When you take the test this way, you’ll also receive a personalized report that helps describe your exact personality type, as well as tools and resources to help you better understand your type. Alternatively, there are also certified professionals who can administer the MBTI to you, in which case the cost will vary depending on which practitioner you choose. And though can’t vouch for the sites on this list, the BetterHelp website provides a list of places where you can take variations of the Myers Briggs test for free. Filtering the Findings Once you have your results, you’ll find that your personality type is based on four dichotomies that were identified by Carl Jung: Introversion/extroversion:  whether you tend to view the world through more of an internal (introversion) or external (extroversion) lens Sensing/intuition:  whether you gather data using more of your external senses (sensing) or inner sources (intuition) Thinking/feeling:  whether you base your decisions on information that’s objective (thinking) or subjective (feeling) Judging/perceiving:  whether you look at the world through a lens of organization and planning (judging) or prefer to keep it more flexible (perceiving) Based on where you fall in each of these areas, you will be designated with one of 16 personality types, which you can see on this type table. Applying the Insights Once you know your Myers-Briggs type, you’ll be ready to use this information to understand how you tend to operate on the job, and you can draw on that information when preparing how you’ll respond to various interview questions. In a nutshell, the way to do this is to compare what you’ve learned about your personality type with what you know about the requirements for the job that you want. Then find ways to emphasize and align the strengths of your personality type with the needs and preferences of the hiring manager as expressed through the job description. For example, let’s say that your personality type includes “thinking,” and the position for which you’re interviewing is very strategic and requires high-level decision-making. You can thus leverage insights about the “thinking” part of your personality type to emphasize your ability to conduct analyses and think logically to arrive at the absolute best solution.
